Zomba Diocese to Hold First-ever Echaristic Congress

The Catholic Diocese of Zomba is set to hold its first-ever Eucharistic Congress from 3rd to 5th September 2026 at Sacred Heart Cathedral, bringing together clergy, religious and lay faithful for three days of prayer, reflection, formation and Eucharistic adoration.

The three-day Congress will be led by the Bishop of Zomba Diocese, Rt. Rev. Alfred Mateyu Chaima, and will provide an opportunity for the faithful to deepen their understanding of the Eucharist and strengthen their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

According to the Diocesan Pastoral Coordinator, Fr. Anthony Chidumu, the Congress will feature a number of facilitators who will address different topics aimed at helping participants deepen their Eucharistic faith.

Bishop Chaima will lead a session on The Centrality of the Eucharist in Families and Small Christian Communities, while Fr. Enoch Kanjira, Rector of Kachebere Major Seminary, will speak on Christ’s Presence in the Church, Especially in Liturgical Celebrations. The Vicar General of the Diocese, Monsignor Bernard Chipole, will facilitate a session on the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation as Preparation for the Eucharist, while Fr. Wilfred Sumani, SJ, from the Catholic University, will lead a session on Renewing and Deepening Our Eucharistic Faith.

The Congress will also feature general Eucharistic adoration every evening, led by some of the Diocesan Deans. At night, the Divine Mercy Apostolate Team will animate the faithful through various prayers and devotions as participants prepare spiritually for the following day.

A major highlight of the Congress will be a Eucharistic procession on Friday, when participants will walk approximately seven kilometres from Sacred Heart Cathedral to St. Charles Lwanga Parish as a public expression of faith in the Eucharistic Christ.

The Diocese is inviting all the faithful to participate in this historic celebration and take the opportunity to grow in faith through prayer, formation, adoration and the celebration of the Eucharist.
