Bishop Chaima Calls for Compassionate Care for the Sick

Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba has urged people to continue caring for the sick through prayer, visits and support in their basic needs. 

He made the call during the Eucharistic Celebration held at Zomba Central Hospital for patients and healthcare workers.

The Bishop said caring for the sick is part of the Church’s mission, citing the Good Samaritan story (Luke 10:25–37) as a reminder that charity to the vulnerable is more important than strict observance of the law.

He encouraged the sick to remain strong in faith and called on health workers to show kindness, love and dedication in their service.

Chaplain for Hospitals in Zomba Diocese, Fr. Charles Namalitha, appealed for the construction of a chapel at the hospital to allow patients to gather for prayers.

Representing the laity, Mr. Hastings Dowe, thanked the Bishop for his continued commitment and urged Christians to support the sick through visits and assistance.

Zomba City Mayor, Christopher Jana, commended the Catholic Church for caring for the vulnerable and encouraged healthcare workers to continue providing quality care.

The Catholic Diocese of Zomba, through the Catholic Women Association, organizes the annual event in February to mark the World Day of the Sick which is celebrated on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. 

Patients and guardians at the hospital received assorted items including sugar, soap, bread, clothes, salt and cash from the Diocese of Zomba and other well-wishers.
