Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba has underscored the vital role of Deans in the pastoral life of the Church, describing them as the Bishop's representatives who help oversee and strengthen the mission of the Church at the deanery level.

The Bishop made the remarks on Saturday, 20 June 2026, during the installation of Father Ignatio Suwedi as Dean of Domasi Deanery at St. Theresa Parish in Liwonde.

Bishop Chaima said that the Church formally installs a Dean to enable the faithful to know their dean and appreciate the responsibilities entrusted to him.

"A Dean serves as the eyes of the Bishop in the parishes under his care," the Bishop said, adding that the Dean is entrusted with monitoring the pastoral life of the Church, promoting collaboration among parishes and ensuring that the Diocese's pastoral mission is effectively carried out.

Bishop Chaima called on the faithful to support and cooperate with their new Dean in both times of joy and moments of challenge. He also urged Father Suwedi to remain a compassionate shepherd by listening attentively to the faithful and accompanying them in their spiritual journey.

Speaking after his installation, Father Suwedi, who also serves as Parish Priest of Domasi Parish, expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to carry out his new responsibilities with dedication, humility and a spirit of service. He said he would work closely with priests, religious and the lay faithful to strengthen unity and build a self-reliant local Church.

Domasi Deanery comprises four parishes: Katamba, Liwonde, Lingoni and Domasi.
