Zomba – Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba has urged Christians and people of goodwill to continue caring for the sick through prayer, visits and support in meeting their basic needs.

The Bishop made the appeal during a Eucharistic Celebration held at Zomba Central Hospital for patients and healthcare workers as part of activities marking the World Day of the Sick.

In his homily, Bishop Chaima emphasized that caring for the sick is an essential part of the Church's mission. Drawing inspiration from the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37), he reminded the faithful that acts of charity and compassion towards vulnerable people are more important than a rigid observance of the law.

"The Good Samaritan teaches us that true love of neighbour is demonstrated through practical acts of mercy. We are all called to care for those who are suffering and in need," said Bishop Chaima.

He encouraged patients receiving treatment at the hospital to remain steadfast in their faith and place their trust in God, even amid illness and uncertainty. The Bishop also appealed to healthcare workers to continue serving with kindness, love and dedication.

Addressing medical personnel, Bishop Chaima acknowledged their sacrifices and encouraged them to uphold the dignity of every patient entrusted to their care.

Chaplain for Hospitals in the Diocese of Zomba, Fr. Charles Namalitha, appealed for the construction of a chapel at Zomba Central Hospital to provide patients, guardians and healthcare workers with a dedicated place for prayer and spiritual nourishment.

Representing the laity, Mr. Hastings Dowe thanked Bishop Chaima for his continued commitment to the pastoral care of the sick. He encouraged Christians to complement the efforts of healthcare providers by regularly visiting the sick and offering practical assistance to those in need.

Zomba City Mayor, Christopher Jana, commended the Catholic Church for its continued concern for vulnerable members of society. He encouraged healthcare workers to remain committed to providing quality healthcare services despite the challenges they face.

The Catholic Diocese of Zomba, through the Catholic Women Association (CWA), organizes the annual event every February in observance of the World Day of the Sick, which is celebrated on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.

As part of this year's commemoration, patients and guardians at Zomba Central Hospital received assorted items, including sugar, soap, bread, clothes, salt and cash donations from the Diocese of Zomba and other well-wishers.

The gesture brought hope and encouragement to many beneficiaries, reflecting the Church's commitment to being close to those who are suffering.

The World Day of the Sick serves as a reminder of the Christian call to compassion and solidarity with those experiencing illness. Through prayer, pastoral care and acts of charity, the Catholic Diocese of Zomba continues to witness Christ's healing presence among the sick and those who care for them.
