Benedictine sisters of Divine Providence
A LITTLE BIT OF OUR HISTORY OF BENEDICTINE SISTERS OF THE DIVINE PROVIDENCE
The Congregation of Benedictine Sisters of Divine Providence was founded in 1849 by the work of Divine Providence, through two courageous young women, the Venerable Servants of God Mary and Giustina Schiapparoli.
In 1847, Voghera, a small town in northern Italy, where they lived with their family, was going through a serious economic crisis. After a period of internal wars, several epidemics and plagues had left many families in misery and made hundreds of children and young people, orphans, who began to live begging in the city streets, in a sad situation of misery and neglect.
Maria and Giustina Schiapparoli, touched by this harsh reality, began to welcome, in their own home, some poor girls, orphaned or abandoned by their families, offering them care and protection and educating them in human and Christian values to honor religion and the society.
In 1849, with a spirit of faith and love, Maria and Giustina consecrated themselves totally to God and to the service of poor and abandoned girls, receiving the religious habit.
Thus, our Congregation of Benedictine Sisters of Divine Providence was born. Many young women seeing the example of love of the two sisters, Maria and Giustina, also wanted to embrace the same ideal of life.
With the opening of several works to welcome girls, the Congregation grew and gradually expanded to many places in different regions of Italy.
In 1936, attentive to the needs of the missionary Church, the Congregation advanced for the first time, beyond the ocean, sending Seven Missionary Sisters to work in Brazil, in a colony of Italian immigrants, in Nova Veneza, in the State of Santa Catarina, through Superior General Mother Elena Arbasino.
The Sisters' presence was requested by the parish priest of the small town, Fr. Miguel Giacca, to work at Hospital São Marcos and also in the pastoral activities of the parish. Thus, the first Benedictine Sisters of Divine Providence set foot on Brazilian soil, on February 28, 1936.
Shortly thereafter, the Sisters also opened a small school, taking care of the education and care of girls and young interns.
Through the first Missionary Sisters and many other Sisters who succeeded them, the Congregation expanded its charitable apostolate to several states in Brazil. Other works were opened and taken over by the Sisters, especially houses for orphaned girls, educational and assistance works, etc.
Thus, with faith and courage, the seed of the Congregation was sown on and fertile Brazilian soil. Over the years, new missionary fronts were opened in other countries in Latin America, Africa, Europe and Asia.
The work was intense. The work of Maria and Giustina Schiapparoli continues to grow, thanks to the dedication, sacrifice and generosity of each Benedictine Sister of Divine Providence.
The example of the Founders, Venerable Servants of God Maria and Giustina Schiapparoli, urges us, at any time and in any place, to open ourselves, with courage and confidence, to the problems of the brothers, especially of the poor and marginalized childhood and youth.
Today we are organized in three Provinces and a Delegation and we are present in 15 countries: Italy, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Mexico, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Romania, Albania, India, Argentina, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Sri Lanka.
The Congregation, like a “great tree”, born of a small and humble “seed”, continues to drop many “fruits of life” everywhere a Benedictine Sister of Divine Providence lives, in favour of the little ones of the Kingdom and for the greatest glory of God.
Thus, the life of the Benedictine Sisters of Divine Providence is simple, as is their story.
